Kickstart Cymru
The Kickstart Cymru project aimed to increase all-Wales capacity to preserve born digital information by building on the work of the ‘Saving the Bits’ training programme.
The Archive Accreditation Standard requires that each service assesses the level of digital preservation procedures in the areas of storage, integrity, control, metadata and content. Reaching the levels for each area requires processes and workflows to be undertaken, such as ensuring that appropriate metadata is gathered, that the data is not corrupted and that controls are in place to ensure ongoing reliable data. This project aimed to assist local authority archive services to deliver against these requirements.
Stand-alone workstations were purchased, thanks to grant award from the Welsh Government. These workstations included the necessary hardware and software to enable a secure, reliable and resilient acquisition processes. They ensure that digital data acquired by organisations from external sources can be processed and quarantined prior to being safely ingested into the main organisational technical infrastructures. This project was completed in March 2023.
